This session explores the crucial role of city–business collaboration in delivering climate friendly solutions for more sustainable food systems.
Cities consume over half of the world’s food, and by 2050 they are expected to consume 80%. Most food-insecure people (76%) live in urban and peri-urban areas, while unhealthy diets are driving public health crises such as obesity and diabetes.
Although city governments are often the biggest single purchasers of food in a region, over 85% of food in many cities is supplied by food businesses. Food businesses therefore have a crucial role to play in developing and delivering positive, integrated solutions for climate and health – cities cannot do it alone. Successful engagement between cities and food businesses is vital to improve diets, reduce food waste and ultimately create equitable, sustainable and resilient food systems.
At this event, C40 will present two Laudes Foundation-supported research projects: the report “Good Food for Healthy Cities”, featuring city case studies and strategies for climate-friendly food sectors, and early findings from “Quantifying the Impact of City-Business Alliances on Food System GHG Emissions and Public Health.”
Through panel discussions and interactive dialogue, participants will explore diverse experiences of city–business alliances and their potential to accelerate food system transformation.
