The visit takes place at the Lacchiarella Organic Waste Plant, which covers a total area of approximately 32,300 m2. The control is under a public participation company, the A2A Group. Its construction began in the mid-1980s and currently includes:
- A platform for separate waste collection open to citizens
- Two bio-drying plants that transform the residual fraction of organic urban waste into fuel or bio-dried material (a compost-like material)
- An activable bioreactor that captures biogas, which is then converted into electricity
- An inertisation plant that recovers material suitable for controlled storage from sludge and light dust produced by the waste-to-energy process
- A new plant that produces biomethane and compost.
The connection between this Plant and the Food System of the City of Milan are clear in this optic, as it represents a strong symbol of circular economy and Food Waste Management, especially how waste and sub-products should be treated and repurposed (dating back to the 1980s), generating compost, biogas, energy, etc. for the entire city.
The event will take place entirely outdoors: presentations will be held while guests visit the plant and so, closed-toe, sturdy shoes and long pants are recommended.
