The Opening Plenary of the MUFPP Global Forum 2025 will inaugurate three days of dialogue and collaboration dedicated to the future of urban food systems.

Celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Pact, the session will reflect on the journey of the past decade, highlighting key milestones while acknowledging the challenges ahead.

The morning session will include institutional welcomes, a keynote address framing the urgency of sustainable and inclusive food policies, and perspectives from international partners on the role of multilevel collaboration.

A debate among mayors from across the world will provide insights into diverse local experiences and priorities, showcasing how cities are leading transformation on the ground.

The plenary will conclude with reflections on the cultural and social dimensions of food, inspiring participants to continue building fairer, healthier, and more resilient food systems.

Programme

Welcoming remarks
The ceremony will open with welcome remarks by Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan, who will officially open the Global Forum, reflecting on the journey of the Pact and the shared vision that unites over 330 cities across the world.

Welcome and introduction by Marina Brambilla, Rector of the University of Milan, that host the Forum and links with the research community.

Keynote address
Jane Battersby, Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town and internationally recognized expert in food systems, will deliver the opening keynote speech, setting the tone for the MUFPP Global Forum discussions.

Institutional remarks
High-level remarks will follow, featuring representatives of international and national institutions to discuss global cooperation for sustainable food systems.

Mayors’ debate
Mayors from different world regions will take part in a high-level political debate, sharing how cities are leading the transition toward more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems.

Closing keynote
The session will conclude with a keynote speech by Carlo Petrini, Founder of Slow Food, offering a reflection on the role of cities and communities in shaping the future of food.
